Yacht Recruitment Reality Check: Toxic Boats, Bad Fits & Broken Standards | Laura-Kate Brown | The Crew Car
Description
Yacht recruitment is not simply a CV, a vacancy and a race to make the placement. Get the match wrong and a crew member can walk into a toxic vessel, a yacht can hire somebody completely wrong for its culture, and both sides pay for a decision made too quickly.
In this episode of The Crew Car, Captain James Battey sits down with Laura-Kate Brown, Manager at Seven Seas Recruitment and former chief stewardess, for an unfiltered look at the realities of hiring and working in modern yachting.
Laura-Kate traces her route from joining her first yacht straight out of sixth form, with no idea what the industry demanded, to working her way through exceptional boats and some absolute nightmares. That experience now shapes the way she recruits. She explains why knowing a candidate matters more than firing the same CV at every vacancy, why personality and crew fit can outweigh a stack of unnecessary certificates, and why Seven Seas has refused to place crew on vessels linked to unpaid wages, harassment or toxic behaviour.
The conversation also challenges the flood of low-cost recruitment agencies and job platforms reducing a highly personal process to price and speed. When salaries for junior crew have barely moved in more than a decade, Below Deck has sold an entertainment version of life onboard, and social media has blurred the line between private service and personal branding, expectations on both sides are badly out of step.
James and Laura-Kate get into crew morale, mental health, life in shared cabins, bad references, outdated wages, rotation, accountability and the need for verified professional records. They also ask a much larger question: if yachting expects seven-star standards from crew, why are so many yachts, employers and service providers still allowed to operate without meaningful scrutiny?
For crew entering the industry, captains building teams and recruiters responsible for where people end up, this is the reality check.
