They Fired Me On My Daughter’s Birthday
Description
They Fired Me On My Daughter’s Birthday is a first-person story about getting fired, job loss, layoffs 2026, corporate layoffs, tech layoffs, banking layoffs, job security, corporate loyalty, workplace pressure and the warning signs workers often miss until management has already made the decision.
Harj Singh, The Host of The Grind Hotline, spent more than seven years in financial services working 10 to 12-hour days, climbing the corporate ladder, helping generate tens of millions in revenue, training teams and working closely with senior leadership. Then the power shifted. The CEO he was aligned with was pushed out, management believed his work could be handed to someone cheaper, and Harj was fired over the phone on his daughter’s birthday.
That call changed how he looked at work, loyalty and job security. He had sacrificed family time, carried corporate stress home and believed strong performance would protect him. It didn’t. Getting fired brought shame, humiliation and guilt, and exposed a brutal reality: top performers can still become vulnerable when leadership changes, corporate politics shift, costs are cut or management decides the same work can be done for less.
They knew. He didn’t.
Less than five years later, the company went bankrupt.
This episode explains what getting fired really felt like, why the decision happened, what Harj wishes he had understood sooner and how that experience helped shape The Grind Hotline.
