Plato: Ancient Athens, Socrates & the Questions That Never End | A Sleep Story from the Pioneers
Season 1
Episode 3
Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description
A calm, carefully researched bedtime journey through the life and ideas of Plato — the ancient Greek philosopher whose questions about knowledge, justice, love, education and reality helped shape more than two thousand years of Western thought.
Tonight’s story takes us back to ancient Athens, where Plato grew up in a city marked by war, political upheaval and extraordinary intellectual life. We follow his relationship with Socrates, the trial and execution of the teacher who profoundly shaped him, and Plato’s eventual creation of the Academy — a community devoted to philosophy, mathematics and sustained inquiry.
Along the way, we explore some of Plato’s most enduring ideas and images: the Allegory of the Cave, the theory of Forms, the divided soul, justice and inner harmony, the Socratic examined life, education as a turning of the mind, and his questions about what it really means to know something.
We also wander through the Symposium and Plato’s reflections on love and beauty, before stepping beyond the walls of Athens with Socrates and Phaedrus to rest beside a stream beneath the shade of a plane tree.
Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening. There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to. Simply close your eyes, settle in, and let the story carry you.
Sleep Stories from the Pioneers is a series of calm, research-led journeys through the lives and ideas of the people who changed how we understand ourselves.
