Friedrich Nietzsche: God Is Dead, Eternal Recurrence & Amor Fati | A Sleep Story from the Pioneers
Season 1
Episode 4
Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description
A calm, carefully researched bedtime journey through the life and ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche — the German philosopher and classical scholar who challenged inherited ideas about morality, religion, truth and what it might mean to fully affirm a human life.
Tonight’s story follows Nietzsche from his childhood in a Lutheran pastor’s household and his years studying the ancient Greeks, through his remarkable appointment as a young professor at Basel, his intense friendship and eventual break with Richard Wagner, and the illness that led him away from university life and into years of wandering across Europe.
Along the way, we explore some of Nietzsche’s most influential and frequently misunderstood ideas: the death of God, nihilism, self-overcoming, the Übermensch, perspectivism, eternal recurrence and amor fati — the challenge of learning to affirm life rather than wishing its difficult parts away.
We also follow the creation of Thus Spoke Zarathustra and return to Sils-Maria in the Swiss Alps, where walking, solitude and the mountain landscape became closely connected with some of Nietzsche’s mature thinking.
Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening. There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to. Simply close your eyes, settle in, and let the story carry you.
Sleep Stories from the Pioneers is a series of calm, research-led journeys through the lives and ideas of the people who changed how we understand ourselves.
