Viktor Frankl: His Life, Logotherapy & Man’s Search for Meaning | A Sleep Story from the Pioneers
Season 1
Episode 8
Published 1 month, 1 week ago
Description
A calm, carefully researched bedtime biography of Viktor Frankl — the Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist who founded logotherapy and spent much of his life exploring one of the most fundamental human questions: what makes a life meaningful?
Tonight’s story begins in Vienna, long before the book that would make Frankl famous. We follow him from his childhood and early fascination with the meaning of life, through medicine and psychiatry, the development of his ideas about meaning, responsibility and human freedom, and the years of Nazi persecution that transformed his life.
We move carefully through Frankl’s imprisonment under the Nazi regime, including Theresienstadt and Auschwitz, without turning suffering into spectacle. His ideas about meaning did not simply appear after the camps — the questions that became central to logotherapy had occupied him years earlier. His later writing drew on those experiences while insisting that suffering itself should never be romanticised.
Along the way, we explore logotherapy, the will to meaning, and the different ways Frankl believed meaning could be found — through creative work or deeds, through love and experience, and through the attitude a person takes toward suffering that genuinely cannot be changed. Frankl did not teach that suffering is good, or that people should passively endure suffering that can be changed.
The story then continues beyond the war into Frankl’s long post-war life of writing, teaching, travelling, mountaineering and eventually learning to fly — following the question of meaning across nearly a century of extraordinary change.
Told slowly and gently for sleep, relaxation and quiet late-night listening. There is nothing you need to remember and nowhere you need to get to. Simply close your eyes, settle in, and let the story carry you.
Sleep Stories from the Pioneers is a series of calm, research-led journeys through the lives and ideas of the people who changed how we understand ourselves.
