Fed Hike Back in Play? Wayve Capital Breaks Down the Jobs Shock

Published 1 month ago
Description

The blockbuster August jobs report just changed the conversation on Wall Street.

On this episode of Wayve Wire, host Todd M. Schoenberger sits down with Joe Besecker, CEO of Philadelphia-based Wayve Capital, and Rhys Williams, CIO of Wayve Capital, to unpack a surprisingly strong labor market, the renewed possibility of a Federal Reserve rate hike, the selloff in AI and semiconductor stocks, and whether investors are becoming too pessimistic about artificial intelligence.

The numbers were difficult for Wall Street to ignore. U.S. employers added 162,000 jobs in August, nearly triple economists' forecast of 56,000, while unemployment remained at 4.1%. The report pushed Treasury yields higher and increased market expectations for a rate hike at the Fed's September 15–16 meeting.

Besecker and Williams challenge one of the biggest fears surrounding artificial intelligence: that AI will inevitably destroy American jobs. Instead, they argue AI could become a powerful productivity engine and job creator, fueling new businesses, investment and economic dynamism.

That debate comes as AI stocks face a much tougher market. NVIDIA remains at the center of the AI investment boom—and just announced its nearly $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face—but higher interest rates and enormous expectations are forcing investors to reconsider how much future growth is already priced into technology valuations.

The conversation also turns to the escalating U.S.-Canada trade dispute. The Wayve Wire panel debates tariffs, the breakdown in negotiations and whether the economic consequences could ultimately outweigh their intended benefits. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said this week that Canada remains prepared to negotiate an agreement benefiting both countries, while disputing claims from U.S. officials about why previous negotiations broke down.

And with inflation data coming next, the stakes for markets are rising. Following Friday's jobs report, Wall Street fell as investors increased bets on tighter Fed policy, making the upcoming CPI and PPI reports potentially decisive for the September meeting.

Can AI keep powering the market if interest rates remain higher? Is artificial intelligence actually a job creator? Are investors abandoning AI stocks too early? And could trade policy become the next major risk for Wall Street?
