A minor pleasure in life is the quiet satisfaction of “I told you so.” I once parked my old car in front of a hotel and locked it as always. A friend pulled up in his brand-new car, laughed, and teased, “What’s the matter? Don’t you trust people?” I replied that, as a Christian, I do not because Scripture declares man a fallen sinner not to be trusted. An hour later I returned to find him furious: a drunk from the hotel bar had climbed into his unlocked backseat, vomited everywhere, and ruined the upholstery. While he searched for rags, I simply noted that locking my doors had spared me the same fate. In more serious ways, countless people who insist on trusting man rather than God reap bitter rewards. Paul and David both affirm, “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Rom. 3:10; Ps. 14:3). There are only two religions: humanism, which trusts in man, or Christianity, which trusts in God. We cannot serve both. Today’s crisis is not a lack of faith but too much faith in man politicians, educators, and systems when only the Lord can save. Isaiah’s warning is urgent: “Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?” (Isa. 2:22).
