Saturn's strange south polar decagon
We begin at Saturn, where astronomers have highlighted a remarkable ten-sided atmospheric wave circling the planet’s south pole. Saturn was already famous for its north polar hexagon, but this newly described southern decagon suggests the planet can organize its weather into more than one kind of giant geometric pattern. Beyond the wow factor, this matters because it gives planetary scientists a fresh test case for understanding how rotation, jet streams, and large-scale waves shape the atmospheres of giant worlds.

Japan launches SLIM and XRISM
Japan delivered one of the day’s biggest mission milestones with the successful launch of the SLIM lunar lander and the XRISM X-ray telescope.
