The Climactic Battle of Actium
Barry Strauss, Part Two: This episode details the climactic 31 BC naval Battle of Actium, which unfolded as a logistical masterpiece orchestrated by Octavian's brilliant admiral, Marcus Agrippa. By capturing the critical supply base of Methone, Agrippa cuts Antony's supply lines, blockading his forces in Greece's malarial swamps. Antony and Cleopatra attempt a breakout by sea. On September 2, Cleopatra escapes with sixty ships carrying Egypt's treasury, and Antony follows, abandoning his army. Despite desperate resistance, Antony's remaining fleet is destroyed with fire arrows. Octavian closes the trap in Alexandria. Believing Cleopatra committed suicide, Antony kills himself; Cleopatra follows in death, using a smuggled cobra. Octavian secures absolute victory by executing Cleopatra's son Caesarion, the rival heir of Julius Caesar. Returning to Rome, Octavian rebrands himself as Augustus, establishing the Roman Empire by masterfully wielding authority over raw power. This victory completely reshapes Mediterranean history, sealing the historic rise of the empire. (2)
