PART 2: Jeju Island's Missing Woman Scandal - Updated Details About JANG MI-RAN

Published 2 days, 12 hours ago
Description

The disappearance and death of Jang Mi-ran, 37, triggered a major policing scandal on South Korea's Jeju Island. Jang was last seen leaving her accommodation on May 12, 2026, and was reported missing three days later. Police officer Boo allegedly closed the case within hours after falsely telling Jang's boyfriend that he had contacted her and confirmed she was safe. Her body was finally discovered 104 days later at a palm farm near her accommodation. Severe decomposition prevented investigators from determining an exact cause of death, although police initially considered hanging more likely than foul play.

The scandal expanded after authorities discovered Boo had handled 298 missing-person cases, with 25 additional cases suspected of improper closure. South Korean police have now launched a review of approximately 310,000 missing-person cases closed nationwide during the previous three years.
