Why The Right Hates Themselves
Description
The Neuroscience of Sacred Values
Ever wonder why Trump supporters will vote to cut their own healthcare, support tariffs that destroy their jobs, and cheer when their own freedoms get taken away, all while claiming they’re “winning”?
There’s a scientific reason for that. And it’s not what you think.
The Sacred Values Experiment
Neuroscientists ran a series of peer-reviewed studies to understand how people make decisions about their deeply held political beliefs. The experimental design was simple but revealing: researchers offered people real money to sign a statement contradicting their political beliefs.
What they found was striking.
Some people, particularly conservatives with deeply held political identities, refused even $1,000 cash on the spot to contradict their beliefs.
Researchers call these “sacred values.” When a political belief becomes sacred, you treat it like a religion. You won’t compromise it for anything, not for money, not for benefits, not even for your own survival.
That’s not politics anymore. That’s cult behavior.
What Happens in the Brain
Then researchers did something fascinating: they scanned people’s brains while they made these decisions.
When someone’s political identity becomes sacred to them, something remarkable happens in the brain:
The part of the brain that does cost-benefit analysis shuts down completely.
That’s the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) the region responsible for:
* Weighing pros and cons
* Calculating whether something helps or hurts you
* Making rational decisions based on outcomes
Instead, completely different regions light up:
* The left temporoparietal junction, associated with processing moral rules
* The ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, involved in semantic rule retrieval
* Brain regions that process disgust and moral outrage
In other words, when faced with a challenge to sacred political values, the brain stops thinking like an economist and starts thinking like a priest.
The Research
This isn’t one study. It’s multiple independent investigations across different countries and populations:
Primary Studies:
* Berns, G.S., et al. (2012). “The price of your soul: neural evidence for the non-utilitarian representation of sacred values.” Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 367(1589), 754-762.
* Led by Gregory Berns at Emory University
* Used fMRI to show that sacred values activate rule-based processing, not cost-benefit analysis
* Participants refused up to $100 in real money to contradict sacred values
* Sheikh, H., et al. (2019). “Neuroimaging ‘will to fight’ for sacred values: an empirical case study with supporters of an Al Qaeda associate.” Royal Society Open Science, 6(1), 181585.
* Scott Atran’s team studying radicalized populations in Barcelona
* Found diminished dlPFC activity (cost-benefit region) when processing sacred values
* Showed increased activity in regions associated with moral disgust
* Atran, S., & Ginges, J. (2012). “Religious and sacred imperatives in human conflict.” Science, 336(6083), 855-857.
* Demonstrated that sacred values are insensitive to material trade-offs
* People will reject enormous incentives to compromise sacred values
What This Means for Politics
Conservative brains treat their political tribe like a religion.
Liberal brains treat politics like policy preferences.
The sacred value brain’s job is simple: protect the tribe at all costs.
When your political tribe becomes sacred, every threat to it feels like death:
* Democrats propose healthcare? Threat to tribe.
* Economists say tariffs hurt you? Threat to tribe
