Smart Men Are Almost Never Conservative

Smart Men Are Almost Never Conservative

Description

There is a pattern that shows up across decades of political psychology research that nobody in mainstream media wants to talk about directly.

The smarter a man is, the less likely he is to embrace conservative politics.

Not slightly less likely. Significantly less likely. And the data goes back further than most people realize.

THE STUDY NOBODY TALKS ABOUT

In 1987, researchers at Saarland University and Philipps University in Germany launched one of the most ambitious longitudinal studies in political psychology. They identified over 7,000 third grade students, isolated the gifted ones, and then followed them into adulthood for 35 years. They measured intelligence. They tracked political views. They watched what happened over time.

The results were consistent and striking.

Men with high IQ scores consistently moved away from conservative politics as they aged. Men with average to below average IQ scores moved toward conservative values and embraced conservative politics at significantly higher rates.

This was not a one-time finding buried in an obscure journal. It was a pattern that held across decades and got replicated across cultures.

Psychologists who study this call it the Cognitive Complexity Openness Hypothesis. The basic argument is straightforward. Higher intelligence correlates with greater openness to new experiences, greater tolerance for ambiguity, and a stronger ability to hold two contradictory ideas simultaneously and evaluate them independently. Conservative ideology, by its nature, demands the opposite. It requires certainty. It rewards deference to authority. It treats complexity as a threat rather than an invitation.

For men with high cognitive capacity, that kind of rigid thinking feels intellectually suffocating. So they reject it.

IT GETS WORSE

In 2019, Alain Van Hiel at the University of Ghent published research that added another dimension to this pattern. His work found that men with low emotional intelligence are significantly more likely to hold authoritarian political views.

This matters because it separates two different kinds of intelligence and finds the same result in both. Raw cognitive ability. Emotional processing capacity. Two different measurements. Same direction. Men who score lower are drawn toward authoritarian conservative politics at measurably higher rates.

The Ghent research built on a substantial body of earlier work including studies from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom that found consistent negative correlations between measured intelligence and right-wing authoritarianism scores.

The pattern is not a fluke. It is a finding that has survived replication across cultures and decades.

WHAT HIGH IQ MEN ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY

It is not enough to say that smart men reject conservatism. The more interesting question is what they move toward and why.

High cognitive complexity does not automatically produce a political identity. What it produces is a tolerance for ambiguity that makes rigid ideological frameworks feel inadequate. Smart men are more likely to hold positions that cross traditional party lines. They are more likely to change their views when presented with new evidence. They are more likely to distrust anyone who claims to have simple answers to complicated problems.

This is why high IQ men cluster toward policy positions that require systems thinking. Climate science. Economic complexity. Public health infrastructure. Immigration as a demographic and economic phenomenon rather than a cultural threat. These are not liberal positions by nature. They are positions that require holding multiple variables in mind simultaneously. Which is exactly what high cognitive complexity enables.

The Republican party has spent decades making that kind of thinking unwelcome. It has replaced policy w
