Volkswagen Layoffs 2026: 100,000 Job Cuts Confirmed

Published 1 month ago
Description

Volkswagen layoffs 2026: Volkswagen has approved another roughly 50,000 workforce reductions, pushing total planned and agreed job reductions across Volkswagen Group to about 100,000. Future Plan 2030 was approved on September 3, and the new round includes management roles as VW moves into a much deeper restructuring. VW layoffs 2026.

Volkswagen already had roughly 50,000 workforce reductions underway across the group. Now its supervisory board has approved approximately 50,000 more positions for reduction worldwide. The important distinction: Volkswagen did not fire 100,000 people overnight. The company’s planned workforce reduction has now reached roughly 100,000 positions.

Why is VW cutting so many jobs? Volkswagen says its European factory network has capacity for more than 500,000 vehicles above demand. Oliver Blume has warned that VW has a major cost disadvantage versus competitors. At the same time, the company is fighting aggressive Chinese automakers including BYD, weaker results in China, U.S. tariffs and high European production costs.

This is not just a factory-floor layoff story. Volkswagen wants a smaller, leaner organisation. The plan includes cutting the model portfolio by roughly 50%, reducing product complexity by about 75%, flattening management, simplifying decision-making, reducing excess factory capacity and targeting a 9% operating margin.

Four German plants are especially important to watch: Emden, Zwickau, Hanover and Neckarsulm. Volkswagen says secure competitive follow-on production cannot currently be guaranteed for these sites during parts of the 2031–2034 period. That does not confirm plant closures, but it raises serious questions about future production, investment and job security.

For workers, the biggest signals may arrive before any formal layoff announcement. Overtime may disappear. Vacancies may stay open. Contractors may be cut. Projects may be paused. Departments may merge. Shifts may shrink. Future work may quietly move somewhere else.

In the episode, we explain the practical questions employees should ask now: What vehicle or platform comes next? Has the investment been approved? What production volume is attached to it? When does the current programme end? Which VW plants and functions are actually receiving future capital?
