You Can’t Heal What You Refuse to Acknowledge | Jeff Dalton
Description
What if healing begins not with pretending you’re okay, but with being honest about where you are?
In this episode of Thought Atlas, I sit down with Jeff Dalton, an author, poet, and speaker whose faith has been shaped by years of personal struggle, rejection, mental illness, and a desire to know Jesus beyond religious performance.
Jeff shares how he came to distinguish between practicing religion and cultivating what he describes as a genuine relationship with Jesus. For him, the difference comes down to the heart. He argues that religious environments can sometimes become focused on external appearances, production, numbers, and what people accomplish, while a relationship with Jesus is about honesty, character, faithfulness, and bringing your whole self before God.
We explore how Jeff’s own experiences with depression, bipolar disorder, rejection, and disappointment changed the way he understood Jesus. He describes being rejected by churches while continuing to experience what he sees as Jesus’ compassion and acceptance.
A central idea throughout the conversation is simple:
“You can’t heal from what you don’t acknowledge.”
Jeff explains why he believes people need to acknowledge emotional pain, trauma, sadness, discouragement, and depression rather than hiding them behind positive language or the appearance of spiritual strength.
He also challenges the pressure some Christians feel to always appear joyful or spiritually strong. Jeff argues that constantly saying the right things or quoting Bible verses can sometimes prevent people from honestly confronting what they’re experiencing.
We discuss what churches can do differently when people are struggling with mental illness. Jeff emphasizes listening rather than immediately giving advice, and shares an experience with a longtime friend who simply listened when he was going through a depressive period.
The conversation then moves into Jeff’s creative work. His book Species of the Heart: Poems and Devotionals combines poetry with devotional reflections. He explains why poetry gives him a way to express emotions and thoughts honestly, including the struggles he experiences, before reflecting on how he believes God responds.
For Jeff, worship is also about bringing your unfiltered self before God. He believes God wants our hearts—including the messy parts—and that we don’t need to hide our pain or shame.
Finally, Jeff offers a message to anyone who feels too broken, ashamed, or inadequate to approach God: look at the cross and consider what it means to him. He says Jesus’ sacrifice demonstrates the value he places on people.
This is a conversation about faith, mental health, honesty, spiritual healing, rejection, vulnerability, poetry, and the difference between performing religion and pursuing a relationship with Jesus.
Jeff’s closing thought is simple:
“Jesus cares about your heart. All of your heart, and everything that’s in your heart.”
