Back to EpisodesWhen Donald Trump's cruelty hits home
Description
Today I became part of the story. Just after 8:00 this morning, while I was still in my pajamas and working on my computer, I heard a crashing sound and men screaming right outside my bedroom window. Before I could even process what they were saying, my daughter came running into my room absolutely terrified, telling me there were men with guns surrounding our house. Before I go any further, I want you all to know my family is fine. But in that moment, nothing felt even close to okay.
Based on the events of 9-3-2026
The Breakdown:
- Masked men with tactical rifles, unmarked vehicles, and an armored truck descended on the neighborhood, using the area in front of the house as a staging ground
- My daughter locked up the pets, got her sisters into a safe room, and called my husband while I tried to find out who they were
- The two fears that ran through my mind: a far-right extremist who sends threats, or the federal government here because of what I write
- After asking repeatedly who they were, one finally answered: "HSI." They were ICE
- At least two people were taken from the street, including an older man with no shoes, no weapon, and not resisting
- His vehicle is still sitting in the driveway tonight, exactly where he left it
- Watching an agent remove what appeared to be a gold cross necklace and hand it to another agent, who pocketed it like a souvenir
- As they left, agents who knew they were being recorded taunted me, one pointing two fingers from his eyes to me, another making a heart, another blowing kisses
- What real law enforcement must feel when untrained people put "POLICE" across their chests and behave this way
- Why the complete absence of accountability, acting as if there would be no consequences, is the most concerning part
- Why videos last forever, surviving administrations, a GOP-controlled Congress, and everyone who looks the other way
- The historical pattern of masked men and unmarked vehicles moving through neighborhoods, and how such regimes have always considered these men expendable
- Trump's Truth Social post that morning calling journalists who accurately report on his Iran war "treasonous SCUM"
- Why the truth is dangerous to people who depend on secrecy, intimidation, and lies to maintain power
- Why supporting independent voices is voting with our dollars until we can vote in the midterms
They wanted us to be afraid. They want us to second-guess everything we say and do. There will come a day when the videos we are taking, the names we are recording, and the evidence we are preserving will be compiled into a record of what happened during this authoritarian takeover and who participated in it. The masks will eventually come off, but the record of what they did while wearing them will remain. They may believe there will never be consequences. We will make sure they are wrong. Because fear is their weapon. It has never been ours.
