A Jury Voted for Life, Alabama Plans to Execute Jeffery Lee Anyways: A Conversation with Attorney MiAngel Cody

Description

In this bonus episode of the podcast, I had the honor of welcoming MiAngel Cody back to the podcast, Attorney at the Capital Habeaus Unit in the Middle District of Alabama's Federal Defender Program and a legal representative for Jeffery Lee, for an updated conversation about Mr. Lee's case. For those of you unfamiliar with Jeffery Lee, he is currently incarcerated and is awaiting execution on death row on September 17 in the state of Alabama, even though his jury never sentenced him to death.

Since we last spoke, MiAngel Cody and other members of Mr. Lee's legal team were directly responsible for changing the course of history on June 11 when a federal judge declared that nitrogen hypoxia, an unethical execution method planned to be used on Mr. Lee, violates the Eighth Amendment's prohibition on cruel punishment--something that has never been achieved in the history of this country, and has a wider ripple effect of justice and impact beyond Mr. Lee and his case.

The jury's verdict recommended life in prison for Jeffery, but the trial judge rejected the verdict and imposed the death sentence. This is known as judicial override, a law that the state of Alabama abolished in 2017 because it is so unjust. Jeffery is a man of faith, a mentor and leader, and a force for positive change and support amongst his community within death row, and his loved ones, as well. He leads with compassion, humility, and grace and his spirit and character inspire others to find courage, hope and change for the better despite all odds. Thank you for tuning in and being here, to not only learn more about Jeffery as a person and his life, but also how you can participate to help save his life.
