The drum is the living heartbeat of the Earth: a primal, mysterious rhythm shared by every human and every creature on the planet. For ceremonial guide and Drum Doula Mia Luz, it is sacred shamanic medicine: a living relationship shaped by intention, reciprocity, Earth connection and deep respect for spirit.

Earlier this year, I felt called to work with a drum of my own. What followed was a deep, physical and emotional experience of creation and connection. In this conversation, I ask Mia to help me understand what was happening beneath the practical steps of that process (and why the drum seemed to call me in the first place).

Mia shares how her own journey led her on a path of healing from debilitating illness toward the heartbeat of Pachamama. She describes how ancestral wisdom and Indigenous teachings, along with an ever-deepening connection to the Original Mother of Drums (the sacred feminine creator), helped open her to the intuitive process she has developed to guide each drum's creation.

We talk about the ceremony, breath, song and animal respect woven through her workshops; the sacred geometry of her distinctive lacing; and the seven-day gestation and awakening process each drum moves through.

Through Mia's work, drum medicine becomes something we can experience as well as hear: carrying the spirit of the animal, the hands and intentions that brought the drum into being, and the ancient heartbeat of the Earth forward with every beat.
