Who holds a pastor accountable when he is wrong?

In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson examines what Scripture says about pastoral accountability, plurality of elders, church authority, and who shepherds the shepherds.

Different church traditions answer the accountability question differently. Some use bishops, presbyteries, district leadership, deacon boards, committees, or congregational structures.

But the deeper question is:

What pattern does Scripture actually give us?

The New Testament repeatedly shows multiple qualified elders sharing responsibility for Christ’s flock. Pastors are not isolated leaders, and other elders are not merely an advisory panel.

Meaningful plurality includes meaningful accountability.

First Timothy 5 holds two truths together:

An accusation against an elder should not be accepted carelessly.

But an elder whose sin is established is not above correction.

Scripture protects pastors from reckless accusations without making them untouchable.

The pastor is not the final authority.

The elders are not the final authority.

The congregation is not the final authority.

Christ is the Head of His Church, and every leader and every structure remains under His Word.

A correctable shepherd is not a weak shepherd.

He is a shepherd who remembers he is still a sheep under the Chief Shepherd.
