September 4 | Keep It Under Control
Description
Today’s reading from Psalm 143–145 and 1 Corinthians 14:21–40 invites us to consider how dependence on God and disciplined spiritual expression form us over time. Both passages remind us that trusting God does not lead toward confusion or self-importance, but toward greater awareness, humility, and order.
In Psalm 143–145, David repeatedly turns toward God for guidance, protection, mercy, and direction. His prayers reflect the steady rhythm of a life learning to depend on God rather than being controlled by circumstances, forming an identity rooted in God’s faithfulness and character.
In 1 Corinthians 14, Paul brings guidance to a church where spiritual gifts could easily become disorderly or focused on individual expression. He calls believers to remain open to prophecy and tongues while also practicing evaluation, restraint, self-control, and consideration for the entire gathered community.
Together, these passages invite us to reflect on whether our spiritual lives are becoming increasingly marked by both openness and maturity. They encourage us to notice whether our desire to express ourselves is balanced by the humility to listen, wait, submit to discernment, and consider what strengthens others.
