Stop Fighting Each Other. Start Fighting for Each Other. | Dr. Harmony
Description
What if a lasting relationship isn’t about finding the perfect person, but about learning how to become better partners together?
In this episode of Thought Atlas, I sit down with Dr. Harmony, a naturopathic doctor who has been practicing for approximately 30–35 years. She and her husband, Kevin, have been married for 24 years and have built their life together around their family, work, faith, and what they describe as conscious growth.
Dr. Harmony reflects on the evolution of their marriage and identifies a major turning point: rediscovering who she wanted to be within the relationship and changing the behaviors that followed from that identity.
She shares how learning to listen to her husband instead of interrupting him, asking for his advice and input, and letting go of the need to always be right changed the way they interacted. She also explains their idea of creating “stands” for one another—thinking about who they are helping each other become in the future rather than continually holding each other to the mistakes of the past.
From there, we explore conflict.
Dr. Harmony describes the difference between competing with your partner and complementing them. She explains why she believes couples should approach disagreements as members of the same team, asking what they can create that works for both people rather than keeping score over who has done more.
She also shares her perspective on forgiveness. For her, forgiveness doesn’t mean pretending that nothing happened. It involves accountability, responsibility, communication, and allowing each other the opportunity to change. She gives everyday examples from her own marriage to explain how honest conversations can prevent resentment from building.
Another major theme is respect. Dr. Harmony talks about what she calls “laying down the sword”—particularly being mindful of words and behaviors that can embarrass, disrespect, or diminish a spouse.
The conversation then moves into her views on masculine and feminine energy. Dr. Harmony strongly challenges some popular interpretations of these concepts, arguing that compassion, success, strength, and vulnerability don’t have to be assigned to one gender.
Finally, when asked for one habit couples could practice, her answer is simple: listen. Not merely listening to respond, but listening to understand how your partner wants to be loved, appreciated, and respected.
Dr. Harmony’s final food for thought comes from the Greek word “metanoia,” which she explains as going beyond the mind.
