Fed Hike Coming? Jay Hatfield Says Wall Street Has It Wrong—and Sees S&P 9,000

Published 1 month ago
Description

Wall Street is bracing for higher rates—but Jay Hatfield says the data tells a very different story.

On this episode of Hatfield Economics, host Todd M. Schoenberger sits down with Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Management and CIO of the ICAP ETFs, for a wide-ranging discussion on the Federal Reserve, inflation, interest rates, AI, stocks and where the market goes next.

Hatfield argues that a Federal Reserve rate hike is extremely unlikely, saying properly adjusted measures of PCE, CPI and real-time inflation indicate inflation is running significantly cooler than headline numbers suggest. He also explains why he believes Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's hawkish rhetoric may have as much to do with demonstrating the Fed's independence as signaling an actual rate increase.

Then comes Hatfield's big market call.

His base-case S&P 500 target is 8,250, with a bullish scenario that could take the index toward 9,000 if geopolitical pressures ease and interest rates decline. But getting there may not be a straight line: Hatfield warns investors about the possibility of a near-term market “stall” and explains the catalysts he's watching.

The conversation also turns to artificial intelligence and individual stocks. Hatfield makes the investment case for Marvell, discusses why he remains constructive on AI infrastructure and data-center development, and explains why alternative asset manager KKR remains attractive as assets under management continue to expand.

Finally, Jay reveals how Infrastructure Capital is positioning portfolios amid the uncertainty—including maintaining approximately 15% cash, emphasizing valuation, and taking a long-term approach while Wall Street reacts to short-term volatility.
