Pope St. Gregory the Great gave up a life of power in Rome for prayer — then used the papacy to feed the hungry and send missionaries to Britain.

Gregory walked away from his post as Prefect of Rome to become a monk, only to be called back and eventually elected pope in 590. As pope, he wouldn't sit down to eat until Rome's hungry were fed first — and he never forgot a group of enslaved boys he'd once seen in the Forum, eventually sending missionaries across the sea to bring them, and all of Britain, the Catholic faith.
