What if politicians had only one chance to make their mark?

In this episode of Thought Atlas, I sit down with Evan Jaqua, an international business development specialist, entrepreneur, and founder of the Solutions Party.

Evan has lived and worked across the United States, Japan, China, and South America. After beginning his career as an engineer in the United States, he moved to Japan, where he earned a master’s degree in computer science in Japanese. He later spent time in China and much of the last 20 years in South America, working across information technology and, more recently, aviation.

Those experiences have shaped the way he thinks about politics and society. Evan says that despite major differences between cultures and political systems, he has repeatedly found that people share many of the same fundamental desires: freedom, prosperity, opportunity, and a better future for their children.

That observation led him to create the Solutions Party, an initiative built around the idea that politics should focus more on solving problems than on party identity.

In our conversation, Evan argues that one of the biggest problems in politics is what he describes as an addiction to power. His central proposal is to eliminate re-election and give elected officials one term to make their contribution. He believes this could reduce incentives to prioritize staying in power and special interests.

We explore his broader vision for political reform, including his ideas about corruption, political parties, elections, journalism, the judiciary, education, energy, and making government more efficient.

Evan also shares his concerns about technology being used by powerful institutions to monitor and control society, arguing that technology should remain a tool for improving people’s lives rather than becoming a tool of oppression.

We discuss why Evan believes reform is preferable to revolution, why he sees democracy as a competition of ideas, and why disagreement and debate can be valuable when they help societies find better solutions.

The conversation ultimately comes back to a simple idea: politics should be about ideas and serving the public—not about personalities or holding onto power.
