At 50, They Left Everything Behind to Ride From Alaska to Panama | Pat & Ralph Wanner

What would you do if you finally had the freedom to pursue the adventure you had been dreaming about for years?
In this episode of Thought Atlas, I sit down with Pat and Ralph Wanner, a couple who, at the age of 50, decided to leave their comfortable life in Colorado and embark on an extraordinary bicycle journey.
Ralph had carried the idea of making this journey for about 20 years. Once they had enough rental income to retire, the opportunity finally arrived. On June 8, 2007, they began their journey from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
What followed was a journey filled with uncertainty, wild animals, extreme weather, mechanical challenges, unfamiliar terrain, and plenty of moments when they had to figure things out as they went. They encountered grizzly bears, black bears, and even a wolf that appeared to stalk them. At one point, Pat chose to leave a snowy section of the route in a vehicle while Ralph continued alone through a snowstorm.
We talk about what it was like to travel using paper maps and an early GPS, how they dealt with uncertainty, why they sometimes questioned whether they should continue, and how doing something difficult together affected their relationship.
But this conversation goes beyond the physical journey.
Pat and Ralph reflect on why people often allow the size of a dream to scare them away from pursuing it, why you can never have everything figured out before you begin, and how facing challenges can reveal strengths you didn’t know you had.
Pat also shares how being in nature gave her a sense of healing and simplicity, away from the worries of work and everyday life.
Their memoir, To the End of the Earth, tells the story of their Alaska-to-Panama journey and the many experiences they encountered along the way.
