Description

What happens when you stop running from your pain and begin asking what you can build from it?

In this episode of Thought Atlas, I sit down with Mr. Whiskey, a U.S. Navy veteran, speaker, author, preacher, comedian, and founder of Couple O’Nukes.

Originally created to highlight the community of nuclear operators he belonged to in the Navy, Couple O’Nukes eventually evolved into a platform focused on self-improvement and difficult conversations around suicide prevention, addiction recovery, mental health, faith, physical fitness, mentoring, health, domestic violence prevention, human trafficking awareness, and sexual trauma prevention and awareness.

Mr. Whiskey shares his perspective on what it means to confront hardship honestly rather than allowing it to define your identity. He describes acceptance as an important turning point in his own journey and explains how faith, conversations with others, and seeing people recover have influenced the way he approaches suffering.

We explore why people often avoid conversations about pain because of shame, pride, fear, or discomfort—and why he believes these conversations are necessary for healing, prevention, intervention, and recovery.

We also discuss the distinction he makes between being a victim of circumstances and allowing victimhood to become an identity, the enormous influence leaders can have on the emotional well-being of the people they lead, and how hardship has shaped his understanding of faith.

One of the more unexpected parts of the conversation is our discussion about humor. Mr. Whiskey explains why he sees humor as a communication style that can sometimes help people engage with difficult subjects they might otherwise struggle to discuss.

Finally, we talk about discipline and consistency as foundations for rebuilding life, and Mr. Whiskey leaves listeners with a message centered on hope: as long as you are alive, there are still opportunities.

A thought to leave with:

“Dum Spiro Spero” — which Mr. Whiskey explains as “while I breathe, I hope.”

And his central reminder throughout the conversation: it’s never too late, and there is always hope.
