Sweet Success - How Milton Hershey Built a Chocolate Empire

Season 5 Episode 164 Published 4 weeks ago
Description

Before Milton Hershey revolutionized confectionary, he was a three-time bankrupt entrepreneur with little to his name. Raised in rural Pennsylvania with a strict Mennonite upbringing, Hershey was taught the values of hard work, frugality, and community. Yet, his path to success was anything but straightforward. His early ventures in candy making ended in total collapse, leaving him broke in Denver, Chicago, and New York.

Despite creditors and family urging him to give up, Hershey refused to quit. Instead, he made a pivotal realization while working with a caramel manufacturer: dairy was the key to rich, shelf-stable sweets. After finally finding commercial success with the Lancaster Caramel Company, he made a daring pivot. In 1893, after seeing German chocolate-making machinery at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Hershey made a bold prediction: "Caramels are just a fad, but chocolate is a permanent thing. Chocolate is the future."

He sold his thriving caramel business for a massive fortune to double down entirely on mass-producing milk chocolate—a luxury item previously reserved only for the wealthy. Through tireless experimentation, he perfected a formula for affordable, high-quality milk chocolate and built the world's largest chocolate manufacturing plant in the heart of Pennsylvania farm country.

Hershey’s legacy, however, extends far beyond candy bars. Guided by his childhood values, he used his incredible wealth to build a complete utopian town for his workers, featuring schools, parks, and housing. Lacking children of his own, he and his wife Catherine founded the Hershey Industrial School (now the Milton Hershey School) for orphaned boys, transferring the bulk of his wealth and controlling stock in the company to a trust for the school. Discover how a man born into modest circumstances turned endless setbacks into an iconic American empire.
