Fighting Fires, Fighting for Breath

Season 2 Episode 42 Published 2 days, 13 hours ago
Description

Ghana’s firefighters run towards burning buildings to save lives and property. But years of breathing toxic smoke may be putting their own lives at risk.

In this episode of Clean Air Report Ghana, journalist and host Michael Asharley investigates the largely unseen health risks facing firefighters, from repeated exposure to dangerous air pollution to shortages of protective equipment and breathing apparatus, limited health screening and inadequate insurance.

Firefighters recount their experiences working in smoke-filled environments, while a thoracic surgeon explains the potential long-term damage to their lungs and the Ghana National Fire Service responds to concerns about the protection available to its personnel.

Clean Air Report Ghana is a collaboration between New Narratives and leading Ghanaian newsrooms. Funding is provided by the Clean Air Fund which had no say in the reporting.
