PADRES POSTCAST: PADRES DISASTER: 1-5 Road Trip Ends With Blown 3-0 Lead, 7-3 LOSS to Reds, WC Tie
Description
The San Diego Padres had a 3-0 lead and a chance to win the series in Cincinnati. Instead, the Reds scored seven unanswered runs, won 7-3, and sent San Diego home with a brutal 1-5 road-trip record.
Ty France gave the Padres an ideal start with a two-run homer in the first inning, his 20th of the season. Fernando Tatis Jr. added an RBI single in the second to make it 3-0, but Casey Mize immediately gave the lead away. Juan Brito hit a three-run homer to tie the game before Héctor Rodríguez followed with a solo shot to put Cincinnati ahead 4-3.
Mize finished with 4 innings, 5 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 walk, 4 strikeouts and two home runs allowed.
The Padres never scored again.
San Diego finished 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, making the Padres just 1-for-17 with RISP over the final two games of the series. They scored three runs over the first two innings Wednesday and were shut out over the final seven.
Ethan Salas made his Major League debut at just 20 years old and finished 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. His biggest opportunity came in the sixth with runners on first and second and nobody out, but Salas struck out as the Padres again failed to capitalize.
Fernando finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and run, while France went 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and a walk. Xander Bogaerts added two hits and a walk.
Cincinnati added an insurance run on Matt McLain’s sixth-inning sacrifice fly before JJ Bleday delivered the knockout blow — a 416-foot two-run homer in the seventh. Bleday finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs.
GRIES breaks down the four-run second inning that changed the game, the Padres’ ongoing RISP disaster, Casey Mize giving away a 3-0 lead, Ethan Salas’ MLB debut, the Daily Stammen Second Guess, and what a 1-5 road trip means for San Diego moving forward.
