This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: John 5:8-10 Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath. So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed.”

They said, “Don’t you dare pick up that mat!” The religious leaders had twisted God’s Sabbath rest into a man-made rulebook. What God meant for restoration, they turned into restriction. What was supposed to be a holy pause became a harsh prohibition. Mercy got muzzled. Healing got handcuffed.

But Jesus stepped in and broke the silence with power. He didn’t just heal the man’s body—He gave him permission to walk out of bondage. That mat wasn’t just a mattress—it was a memorial. A testimony. A symbol of where he used to be.

Wherever your bed is, that’s where your home is. And this man had been living in despair, sleeping in defeat. But thanks to Jesus, he wasn’t going back to that place. No more lying in pain. No more waiting by the pool. No more hoping somebody else would help.

Jesus said, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk.” And when Jesus speaks, chains break. When Jesus commands, mercy moves. When Jesus heals, you don’t just get up—you get out.

So go ahead and carry that mat. Let the world see what grace can do. Let the religious crowd gasp. Let the critics talk. Because when Jesus sets you free, you don’t need their permission to praise.
