Tiene dos idiomas oficiales: el español y el guaraní, siendo uno de los pocos países de América donde una lengua indígena es hablada por gran parte de la población, incluso por personas no indígenas. El uso mezclado de ambos idiomas se conoce como jopará.Existe una comida llamada "sopa" que no es sopa.Esta es una de las curiosidades que más sorprenden a los extranjeros. Se llama: Sopa paraguaya. Pero cuando la ves, descubres que es sólida. Es una especie de bizcocho salado. No tiene salida al mar, pero cuenta con una marina que opera en los ríos Paraguay y Paraná.El tereré es la bebida nacional: es una infusión de yerba mate con agua fría, muy popular debido al clima cálido del país. Asunción es una de las ciudades más antiguas de Sudamérica, fundada en 1537. La Guerra de la Triple Alianza (1864–1870) tuvo un enorme impacto demográfico y económico en el país, siendo uno de los conflictos más devastadores de la historia de Sudamérica. El ferrocarril llegó muy temprano: Paraguay fue uno de los primeros países de Sudamérica en contar con este medio de transporte. Se le conoce como "el corazón de Sudamérica" por su ubicación geográfica en el centro del continente.
