Electric Dreams: Can Ghana Drive Away from Trotro Smoke?

Season 2 Episode 41 Published 3 days, 6 hours ago
Description

For thousands of commercial drivers and passengers in Ghana, breathing vehicle exhaust is an unavoidable part of the daily commute. Could electric vehicles change that?

In this episode of Clean Air Report Ghana, host Michael Asharley presents a special report by journalist and New Narratives Clean Air Reporting Fellow Wonder Ami Hagan on Ghana's emerging transition to electric transport. She speaks with commercial drivers who have spent years working amid traffic fumes, meets people already using electric vehicles, and examines the infrastructure and policies needed to make cleaner transport more widely accessible.

With Ghana aiming for 35% of its vehicle fleet to be electric by 2035, the report asks whether electric mobility can deliver more than quieter and cheaper journeys. Could it also help clean up Ghana's polluted air and protect the people who spend their working lives on the road?

Clean Air Report Ghana is a collaboration between New Narratives and leading Ghanaian newsrooms. Funding is provided by the Clean Air Fund which had no say in the reporting.
