September 1 | Spiritual Gifts Are for Service

Published 1 month ago
Description

Today’s reading from Psalm 135–136 and 1 Corinthians 12 invites us to consider what God gives and how His generosity gradually shapes how we understand ourselves and our relationship with others. Both passages draw our attention away from ourselves and toward a God whose goodness, faithfulness, and grace are the source of what we receive.

In Psalm 135–136, God’s people repeatedly remember who He is and what He has done. Their worship is shaped by the steady rhythm of remembering His goodness, His faithfulness, and His enduring love, forming an identity rooted in what God has graciously done for them.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul reminds believers that spiritual gifts come from the same Spirit and are expressed through different forms of service. Rather than becoming sources of comparison or spiritual status, these gifts call believers to recognize that what God gives each person is intended for the good of others.

Together, these passages invite us to reflect on what we have received from God and how we understand its purpose. They encourage us to notice whether we view our gifts primarily through the lens of ourselves or whether we are gradually learning to see them as expressions of God’s grace meant to serve the people around us.
