Venerable Marie-Josephte Fitzbach turned her own grief into an open door for women no one else in Quebec would take in.

Widowed young, Marie-Josephte Fitzbach joined the Sisters of Charity of Quebec and spent her nights bringing her sorrows to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, asking who needed her most. The answer was always the same: women just out of prison, with nowhere else to turn. She opened a refuge called Sainte-Madeleine, refusing to ask anyone to prove they deserved help first, and eventually founded a whole new religious community to keep the door open.
