IRAQ'S DOLLAR GAP EXPLODES: Is Banking Reform Working?
Description
Iraq's banking reforms are facing another major test -and the parallel market is refusing to disappear. https://www.myfxbuddies.com/2026/08/iraqs-dollar-gap-explodes-is-banking.html The Iraqi Central Bank has spent months changing the way foreign currency transactions are handled, strengthening banking compliance, expanding correspondent banking relationship regulating exchange companies, and working to bring more dollar transactions into the formal banking system. But the latest numbers show that a major gap remains. At the end of August, the parallel market was selling $100 for approximately 154,500 Iraqi dinars, while the Central Bank's official rate was around 131,000 dinars per $100. That's a difference of approximately 23,500 dinars — or about 18%. So the big question is: Are Iraq's banking reforms actually reaching the real economy? The Central Bank has been working to reconnect Iraqi banks with international financial channels and improve compliance with anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing requirements. Some banks have reportedly become eligible to return to foreign correspondent banking channels after meeting additional requirements. The Central Bank has also taken action against exchange companies that violated regulatory controls. But despite these changes, the parallel market remains active. The International Monetary Fund has pointed to factors including informal trade, demand for dollars outside regulated channels, speculation, and difficulties accessing official currency channels. And Iraq faces another complicated issue: its financial relationship with the United States while maintaining extensive economic ties with Iran. This creates a difficult balancing act for Baghdad. Stronger compliance can help protect Iraq's banking system from sanctions and financial isolation — but if legitimate customers and businesses still find the official system too difficult, expensive, or slow, demand can continue flowing into the parallel market. So this is no longer just about changing banking rules. The real test is whether Iraq's new financial system can compete with the parallel market in access, speed, and cost. And that could be one of the most important economic stories to watch as Iraq moves forward. What do you think? Is Iraq's banking reform beginning to work - or is the parallel market proving that much more needs to change? https://tinyurl.com/godhastheanswers 📌 Disclaimer: This video is for news, commentary, and educational discussion.
