Money Can’t Give You Discipline, Patience, or Emotional Control | Mitch Abel

Description

What happens when you discover that knowing how the market works is only one part of becoming a successful trader?

In this episode of Thought Atlas, I sit down with Mitch Abel, founder and CEO of Investment Current. After 40 years working in corporate America in telecommunications, Mitch was forced into retirement at 62. Looking at his portfolio, he became concerned that he might outlive his money.

He began studying investing and eventually moved into options trading. The journey was far from smooth. Mitch lost $150,000 in six months while learning to trade. Rather than walking away, he went back through his education, practiced every day, changed his approach, and says he recovered the $150,000 within six months.

That experience eventually led him to start teaching others.

In our conversation, we explore:

• Why Mitch believes education is the first foundation of trading• Understanding charts, candlesticks, price action, support, and resistance• Why patience means waiting for the market rather than chasing trades• Why winning and losing are both part of trading• The importance of having clearly defined entry points, targets, and exit rules• Why discipline means treating trading as a business rather than a pastime or gamble• How emotional reactions can influence trading decisions• Mitch’s experience of physically shaking and freezing while trying to enter trades• Why he put reminders around his workspace to separate his personal worth from his financial results• The role of fear, greed, excitement, and panic in trading• Why he believes self-mastery is the real competitive edge• Why beginners in his program use simulated or “paper money” trading before risking their own capital• The role of consistency in developing trading skills• How his live trading room works and why he emphasizes real-time interaction• The different groups of people Mitch says join his program, from younger aspiring entrepreneurs to people approaching or already in retirement• Whether artificial intelligence will eventually be able to replicate his trading process• Why Mitch currently believes AI cannot duplicate what he and his traders see and interpret in the market• How he is using AI to organize and make his educational material more accessible• Why he believes having more information can sometimes create more noise rather than better decisions• And ultimately, what money can provide—and what it can never provide

For Mitch, money can provide peace of mind and help pay off debt.

But it cannot give you the things he considers essential to successful trading:

Emotional control. Discipline. Patience.

Those, he says, are things you have to develop yourself.
