2026 National Firearms Survey: Gun Ownership, Defensive Gun Use, AR-15s and Standard Magazines
Description
A massive new national firearms survey challenges nearly every major claim advanced by the gun-control movement.
Mark Walters breaks down the 2026 National Firearms Survey in plain English, including its analysis of more than 51,000 American adults and 16,688 validated gun owners. The findings estimate that approximately 88 million adults personally own firearms—and that America’s gun-owning population is becoming increasingly female and racially diverse.
The survey also estimates approximately 2.2 million defensive gun uses annually. In more than three-quarters of the reported incidents, no shot was fired. Mark explains why successful defensive gun uses frequently disappear from official crime statistics: the firearm may stop the crime before it happens, leaving no shooting, injury or completed offense to report.
The numbers surrounding public carry, AR-15-style rifles and magazines holding more than ten rounds are equally explosive. The study estimates that 33.6 million Americans carry handguns in public, 44.5 million adults currently own magazines holding more than ten rounds, and 26.4 million adults own an AR-15 or similarly styled semiautomatic rifle.
With an estimated 60 million of these rifles and 539 million standard-capacity magazines already in circulation, can politicians honestly continue calling them “dangerous and unusual”?
Mark examines the paper’s strongest findings, its potential importance in Second Amendment litigation and the methodological limitations listeners should understand before treating any survey estimate as absolute fact.
