West Virgina Is Unanimous As Big 12's Dark Horse, but Will BYU Bottom Out?

Episode 1741 Published 1 week, 1 day ago
Description

Entering the season comfortably positioned inside the top 15 of the national polls and widely picked to return to the Big 12 Championship game, the BYU Cougars carry a target on their back as one of the conference's premier standard-bearers. However, a closer look at their roster construction and the volatile nature of the league suggests that BYU might be a prime candidate to slide below lofty expectations.

The primary cause for concern rests on offensive uncertainty, specifically the progression of quarterback Bear Bachmeier. While Bachmeier flashed promise as a true freshman last year, trusting a young signal-caller to consistently navigate a grueling conference slate is a risky proposition. Compounding this issue is a thin wide receiver room. Outside of Jojo Phillips, the unit lacks proven depth, leaving the Cougars vulnerable if opponents manage to bracket their top targets or if injuries strike.

Furthermore, significant questions linger on special teams. BYU must completely overhaul its core special teams units, replacing a productive cast of starters at punter, kicker, and return specialist. In a conference as tightly contested as the Big 12—where games are routinely decided by a single possession—slippage in the third phase of the game can easily flip narrow wins into frustrating losses.

Finally, the narrative surrounding BYU’s ceiling might be inflated by a favorable bounce of the ball in close games a year ago. As the rest of the conference aggressively retools via the transfer portal and programs like Houston, Utah, and TCU hunger for the top tier, the margin for error is razor-thin. If Bachmeier experiences growing pains or the offense stalls, the Cougars could easily discover that their preseason ranking overestimated their readiness to sustain elite status.
