Have you ever loved somebody so much that you started carrying things that were never yours to carry? Their debt. Their anger. Their consequences. Their lack of accountability. Their refusal to heal. And somewhere along the way, you went from helping them through a season to becoming responsible for a lifestyle they weren't willing to change.
There is a difference between compassion and carrying somebody's chaos. There is a difference between supporting someone and becoming their savior. You can pray for somebody, love them, listen to them, give them resources, encourage them and genuinely want to see them become better—and still decide that you will no longer participate in the patterns that are destroying them, you, or everyone around them. Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do isn't to keep rescuing someone from the consequences of their choices... it's to finally step back and let those consequences speak.
In this conversation, we're getting honest about awareness, boundaries, safe support and detachment—and what it really means to steward the people, relationships, finances, household and purpose God has entrusted to you. Because drowning together doesn't prove that you love somebody. And losing yourself trying to save someone who refuses to swim isn't the same thing as helping them.
Sometimes you have to go from “one of them”... to “none of them.”
Not because you stopped caring.
Because you finally understood that you can't become somebody else's permanent operating system.
