How CrossFit Conquered Fitness, Then Started Giving It Away

Season 1 Episode 55 Published 17 hours ago
Description

Here is a strange claim to hear from a CrossFit affiliate: CrossFit won. Completely. So thoroughly that most people never noticed it happen, and then it started handing the victory away.

In this storytelling episode Liam traces the most influential thing to happen to fitness in twenty five years. How a genuinely radical idea, constantly varied functional movement for everyday people, done hard, in a community, quietly conquered the entire landscape. The proof is all around us in Ireland: Hyrox and Tryka, both built on CrossFit's DNA, are booming, and even budget globo gyms like Flyefit now run those race formats as scheduled classes while nearly every big chain has bolted on a functional training zone. The method escaped the brand and became the default.

Then the story turns. The CrossFit Games slowly reframed a fitness program for ordinary people into an elite spectator sport, and a wave of competition focused programming (Mayhem, HWPO and others) pulled the whole community's centre of gravity toward the aspiring athlete and away from the everyday person it was built for. Add a bruising leadership controversy and a steep 2024 fee hike, and affiliates left in their thousands, though tellingly, most kept the method and simply dropped the badge.

Liam is honest that he debates leaving every year and stays anyway, because the methodology changed his life and WSF trains on the original doctrine: broad, scalable, for real people, not Games prep. He closes with a genuine plea to CrossFit's new leadership to get the magic back.
