Back to EpisodesHave You Been To The Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami? Come w/ Athalie Edwards & Dom
Description
In Girl, Come Sit With Me, Dominique Dorsett sits down with Athalie Edwards, Executive Director of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust, for a conversation about the history, legacy, resilience, and future of one of Miami’s most important historic spaces.
Athalie shares why preserving this story matters, the plans for a permanent museum, and the work being done to collect artifacts and oral histories from elders who remember Historic Virginia Key Beach Park before it closed. We also talk about the generations of Black Miamians who learned to swim here, found love here, worshipped and were baptized here, and even traveled to the beach by boat before there was a causeway.
But this conversation isn’t only about where we’ve been. It’s about where we’re going.
We talk about the future of the park, ways the community can help preserve its history, activities families can enjoy today, and why younger generations need to experience this space for themselves.
Plus, we’re talking about The Poetry Potluck, returning Sunday, August 30, from 2:00 PM–7:00 PM for an afternoon of poetry, food, culture, community, and connection.
