In this episode, I sit down with Gaylen Wilson to talk about a life that has repeatedly required him to rebuild from the ground up. Mr. Wilson takes me from growing up in rural Colorado and becoming a farmer to devastating crop failures, a career as a stockbroker, another major financial collapse, and a decade-long struggle with alcoholism. We discuss functioning alcoholism, sobriety, the importance of developing emotional tools before crisis hits, and why Mr. Wilson believes gratitude for what remained helped prevent repeated losses from turning him into a bitter man.

Mr. Wilson's story eventually becomes a fight for his physical life. After initially being told he had pneumonia, he learned that he was experiencing severe congestive heart failure, with his heart functioning at an extremely dangerous level. His condition continued deteriorating for years until June 2018, when he and his wife received the call that a donor heart was available. Hours later, Mr. Wilson received a heart transplant—a second chance that he says created an intense desire to use the additional years of his life to help other people.

That mission eventually led Mr. Wilson and his wife into relationship coaching and the development of what they call the Monument Method. We explore his belief that couples should picture their relationship as something they are building together, with loving actions strengthening the structure while destructive arguments, contempt, and emotional withdrawal slowly damage it. Mr. Wilson explains how he and his wife use a predetermined "sacred word" to interrupt escalating conflict, reconnect, regulate themselves, and return to difficult conversations without treating each other as enemies.

We also discuss emotional safety, intimacy, erectile dysfunction, long-term marriage, conflict repair, dating culture, fight-or-flight responses within relationships, and Mr. Wilson's developing Sanctuary Bond concept. At the center of the conversation is a simple challenge: winning an argument means very little if you damage the relationship in the process.
