Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated by a car bomb near her home in October 2017 after years of exposing alleged corruption involving Malta's political and business elite. Investigators eventually uncovered a murder plot involving convicted hitmen, bomb suppliers, middleman Melvin Theuma, and wealthy businessman Yorgen Fenech, who prosecutors accuse of commissioning the killing for €150,000.

Fenech denies ordering the assassination and claims former government chief of staff Keith Schembri was actually behind the plot, an allegation Schembri denies.
