By funneling support to groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis, Iran could project power across the Middle East without ever technically firing the first shot from its own soil. This 'forward defense' strategy allowed them to threaten rivals and protect the regime while keeping the actual battlefield far from the Iranian border. It effectively shielded Tehran from direct retaliation while turning groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen into extensions of Iranian state power. But that delicate equilibrium was shattered following the events of October 7, 2023. What was once a subtle game of influence has transformed into an active struggle for survival. The United States and Israel moved away from simply managing Iranian influence toward a deliberate policy of structural dismantling.
