Back to EpisodesJimmy Cantwell | Cowboy Songs, Horses & Stories from the American West
Description
Jimmy Cantwell is a Colorado-based singer-songwriter and second-generation horseman whose music is rooted in the real-life experiences of the American West. A soldier, horse trainer, working cowboy and storyteller, Cantwell has spent years gathering the kind of experiences that can’t be manufactured—and he has turned those miles, horses, hard work and lessons learned into authentic country and Western songs.
Cantwell has ridden colts, trained horses for both the public and the U.S. Army, and picked up cowboy day work along the way. That background gives his songwriting an unmistakable authenticity. Rather than simply singing about Western life, Cantwell writes from a life he has actually lived. His music moves comfortably between traditional country, Western music and the storytelling traditions that have long connected cowboys through song.
His talent has also earned recognition within the Western music community. Cantwell took first place in the 2024 IWMA Colorado Chapter Talent Round-Up, further establishing himself among a new generation of performers carrying Western music forward.
In 2026, Cantwell made his debut at the prestigious 41st National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada, presented by the Western Folklife Center. There he performed alongside artists including Brigid & Johnny Reedy and Dakota Holdaway, sharing original songs such as “Maybe Someday,” “Worlds Collide,” “Fiddlers Lament,” “Sleepless, Thoughtful, Nights,” “Cowboy Till I Die,” and “Cicada Song.”
That Elko appearance helped introduce Cantwell to an even wider Western audience, with his thoughtful songwriting and musicianship drawing attention as part of the next generation of Western performers.
Cantwell continues to write, record and perform, including the 2026 release “Tonight’s The Night I Start Drinking” on Cloverdale Records.
At his core, Jimmy Cantwell represents what makes Western music endure: real experiences turned into real songs. Whether the story comes from horseback, military service, a day’s cowboy work or another stretch of road, Cantwell delivers it without pretense. As his National Cowboy Poetry Gathering biography puts it, at the end of the day he’s simply a “good ol’ cowboy singer.”
