NXIVM: The Self-Help Empire That Branded Women

NXIVM: The Self-Help Empire That Branded Women

Published 2 months ago
Description
NXIVM began as Executive Success Programs, a personal-development company based around Albany, New York, led by Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman. It promised discipline, ethical growth, confidence, and professional success. Some participants said the courses helped them. Others later described a high-control world organized around hierarchy, status, secrecy, loyalty, and Raniere, who was known inside the group as Vanguard. This episode follows the documented escalation from seminars and colored sashes to DOS, a secret society created around 2015 and presented to recruits as an elite women’s mentorship group. Federal prosecutors established that DOS was headed by Raniere, used master and slave terminology, required compromising collateral, imposed obedience, diets, assignments, and readiness drills, and branded women near the pelvic region with a symbol incorporating Raniere’s initials. The story centers on Sarah Edmondson, Allison Mack, Lauren Salzman, Catherine and India Oxenberg, Daniela, Camila, the Bronfman funding, the 2017 exposure, the federal investigation, Raniere’s arrest in Mexico, the Brooklyn trial, and the 120-year sentence. The central question is how apparent consent can be reshaped by community, trust, fear, secrecy, and gradual demands.
This podcast uses artificial intelligence in its research, writing, production, and narration. Episodes are editorially reviewed before publication.
