I greet you in Jesus’ precious name! It is Friday morning, the 28th of August, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today.

We start in the Book of Romans 14:3. This is Paul speaking, he says:

”Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; …” 

When you go to somebody’s house, you eat whatever they give you. There are some people who are so foolish, they will go to a primitive village somewhere in Central Africa, they will preach a fiery sermon, the local people will be deeply touched in their hearts and they will pray the sinner's prayer. They will invite you to their humble home. They have very little food to eat but what they’ve got they will offer you, and they might bring in a nice big leaf and on it are some big, fat, juicy worms. 

You’re a missionary, you are trying to bring the Gospel of Jesus to these people now. What are you going to do? You are going to do exactly what they do. You are going to pray, “Sanctify this food to my body, Lord,” and then you are going to eat those worms heartily, and they will be so appreciative of what you have done. But if you preach a wonderful sermon, they give their lives to the Lord, you go to their home, they offer you the food that they’ve got and you turn it away - you say, ”No, I can’t eat that” or “I don’t eat that” -  that will do more harm because you are judging them.

Jesus says in Matthew 15:11:

”Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man; but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.” 

When in Rome, do what the Romans do! You’ve heard that said as well. In South Africa, we eat something called biltong. It is dried meat. No, it has not been cooked. It is delicious. It is one of my favourite dishes. We also eat something called dry wors, it’s a sausage that has been dried and hasn’t been cooked. We eat it heartily, and if you want to win a soul to Christ, don’t judge him, just eat heartily, and he will probably be more impressed by the way you treat his wife and his home than by any fancy talking.
