St. Monica wept for years over her brilliant but faithless son, Augustine, who ran from God and from her — even sailing away from Africa in the night without saying goodbye. She followed him all the way to Milan, praying and fasting the entire way, until she watched him step into the baptismal font at the Easter Vigil, at last a Catholic Christian.
