Published 3 weeks, 3 days ago
Description
Think quick- in a disaster scenario, like a tornado or a fire, would you know what to do? What if you use a mobility device or if you’re deaf? According to some statistics, people with disabilities are 2 to 4 times more likely to die in a disaster. Her Turn reporter Arlene Zaucha talks with Alex Brady, a student at UW Madison studying political science, public policy and disability rights, who has spent the summer as an intern with the city of Madison in the office of civil rights. She is helping to plan a Disability and Deaf Conversation about emergency planning on Tuesday, September 15th at 6:30pm at the Municipal Building on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Room 206. There is also a virtual option available. Register for the discussion at eventbrite.com. For more information you can check out a general DHS checklist for what to take with you in an emergency. Also available is a specific checklist for people with disabilities.
