Episode Details

Could NFL players actually return to college football? And just how close was South Carolina to landing one of the players at the center of the controversy?

On today’s episode of Locked On Gamecocks, Chris Marler breaks down one of the wildest stories of the 2026 college football offseason after the SEC moved to prevent players with NFL experience from returning to college football.

Chris discusses former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who ultimately landed at LSU after drawing interest from South Carolina and Ole Miss, and explains why Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks were willing to explore adding him. Is pursuing a former NFL player crossing a line — or simply doing whatever it takes to compete in the modern SEC?

Then longtime friend of the show Mike Calabrese joins Chris for a wide-ranging conversation about the future of college athletics and the upcoming 2026 college football season.

Mike explains his work surrounding the Protect College Sports Act, what the proposed legislation could mean for the transfer portal, NIL and revenue sharing, and why federal legislation could have massive implications for the future of college sports.

Then it’s time to talk actual football.

Mike gives his outlook for South Carolina in 2026, why Kendal Briles could completely transform the Gamecocks offense and why LaNorris Sellers remains one of the most intriguing quarterbacks in college football.

Could Sellers bounce back in a big way? Could South Carolina go from a four-win disappointment to an eight- or nine-win team? And could Sellers even become a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate?

Plus, Chris and Mike dive into their favorite college football futures and Week 0/Week 1 bets, including LSU’s national championship upside, Georgia’s path back to Atlanta and several early-season underdogs worth watching.
