Viola Davis is making it clear that she is not accepting Target’s apology, and Pastor Jamal Bryant is now speaking up as well. The pressure is growing, but I want to see MORE public figures use their voices.
This is a follow-up to yesterday’s video about Target and the outrage surrounding the children’s costume that many people felt evoked Jim Crow imagery.
Target has apologized, but for me, the apology is not enough.
I am denouncing Target, and I believe there should be a boycott. When something this offensive makes it through the process, gets approved, and ends up being sold to families, I believe there have to be real consequences and accountability beyond simply issuing an apology after the backlash begins.
And I’m glad to hear that I’m not alone.
Where are the celebrities? Where are the entertainers, athletes, influencers, community leaders and other people with massive platforms?
I’m demanding that more public figures speak up because this is bigger than one costume or one apology. Companies pay attention when the public makes it clear that certain things will not be tolerated.
As Maya Angelou famously taught us, when people show you who they are, believe them.
